NHB142 - Tot watter mate speel Suid Afrikaners met grond / To what extent are South Africans playing with soil

From my point of view i think South-Africans have such a huge burdon to bare in terms of having to produce maximum yield with very little resources such as capital and other support from the government. Therefor they cant manage the soil and resources, obtain a very high yield, feed the nation and manage resources in scuh a manner to keep it sustained for future generation to use all at the same time. Food price fixing is also a major issue that should be looked into.

    1. Is government support not going to make things worse in terms of degradation. There is no appreciation if you do not have to work for something and you can continue with bad practices because government will carry the consequences and actually the don't.

    2. I totally agree, because lets face it, they have done more harm than any good to our resources by depleting most of our lands and resources to first of all put SA on the map and secondly to maintain a healthy economic system. But still the countries higher authority are so ignorant to the fact that we can't compete with first world countries such as Great Britain for example. therfor they do to our land whatever they see fit to in a way "impress" other countries.

What im trying to say and add on is that inexperienced farmers cant be all to blame when this is what the government told them to do. They were given a recipe. The farms they got weren't as we would call it "proof plase", it was given with the purpose to produce and at the same time build up experience like all the other older and more experienced farmers.

    1. you aboslutely right, nobody received farms and those that did had valid reason and proof for why it was allocated tot them. Many years ago the same commersial farmers also made mistakes for which we still carry the consequences today. This same commercial farmers also continue with high intensity farming without putting back or lowering inputs.

    2. So basically every one is playing a blame game, every one talks but nobody really listens. all im saying is, if the government start taking responsibility and take action and stop trying to make things happen over night than our country will not have these kind of problem in the future.

  6. South Africans in general seem to forget or overlook the value of land that is viable for agriculture. The government seems to see land as a pleasing mechanism for the public to see that they are trying to support the farmers. Farmers on the other hand seem to not realise or are not interested in the fact that they are depleting the natural resources of their lands and at the same time could be avoided if farmers would come to terms with technology and scientists. In the the long run technology could possibly secure better environment and income and so would farmers benefit from scientific work and research. The biggest issue with farmers is that they are still stuck in the old ways and only look to land as a profit making process by ensuring maximum output from the land. In terms of "playing with soil" one could see it in the sense that farmers are not playing enough with their soil in a research or scientific way but South Africans are "playing with soil" as in they are playing with fire due to depleting soil and maximising cultivation and in the end destroying it. This would mean that farmers would have to leave the land to rest for a very long time which still does not guaranty that the land would be able to repair itself and in turn causes the farmer to deplete other lands to make up for any lost land.

    1. This very well summarised and as human nature we have to blame someone. In this case they either blame the government for not supporting them or they blame BBBEE projects. And in both instances the farmer must start with his/her own business and do things right.

  9. I feel that South Africans generally don’t care about the extent in which they destroy the soil or exploit the soil. I feel that we have this mentality that as long as it doesn’t affect me and my income its ok. I feel that we think that there is enough fertile soil in South African and that we think that the way we are farming it will have a very small effect or minimum effect on the soil in the long run . We as South Africans don’t understand the economic value soil has and how essential it is too our survival. We have very little knowledge of our environment and the changes it is experiencing.

    1. You have summarised this very well and it is correct. We therefore should increase our education programmes for conservation and resource management. It is a mindset change that will take more than a generation to have an effect. The greed of people and their selfishness also contribute.

  10. South africans are building too many houses in areas that can be used for agricultural puposes.Agricultural is also being decreaes by the building of new roads. This is due too the greed of humans to have to much than is nessary. We should live more economically so that our natural resources can be uesd as effectivly as possible

    1. This means that the biggest problem is the ever increasing population. It is humans and the basic needs are food and shelter and in South Africa people are settling and building house structures in the flood plaines and areas that are not suitable for houses. And with this farmers are using poor quality soil for agricultural purposes and with high input cost, food prices actually increase.

a factor in which people harm the soil is definatly by illegal dumping. harmful waste and chemicals are often improperly disposed of on open lands and in soil. this might be getting rid of waste but in return it is creating a problem with decreasing growth potential and fertility of soil. it is important that people are educated about where to dump there waste correctly and responsibly in such a way that it it does not pollute the soil.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Regardless of where you dump, it is still waste that needs to be process and it is ever increasing. It is correct to say that education plays a vital role but we have to educate and show people the what the consequences will be if they do not change.

  14. Farmers need to use different farming techniques in order to maximise the yield and to take proper preventative methods to avoid the land from becoming infertile. Farmers need to be educated in using these techniques and methods.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Would you then say that adding fertilisers and soil cultivations are enough? We take more from the soil especially with intensive farming and the pressure to supply for international markets and we are not able to put back what we take out

      Delete
    2. No,once the natural nutrients are removed from the soil it is rather difficult to replace it with fertilisers. Therefore good management is needed to control the amount of nutrients taken out by a specific crop. The farmer could also change crops for (example one year they could plant potatos and the next maybe butternut) this type of management will prevent the loss of specific nutrients in the soil allowing the soil to "rest". Certain crop use nutrients from the soil that others do not need therfore it helps the farmers to preserve their land and make it more fertile for the future.

      Delete
  15. Another problem we face as a nation is a lack of respect and understanding for the value of soil (land) as a resource. The majority of our country is populated by poor individuals that are primarily concerned with staying alive and conservation is not a part of their day to day living. As a result we find many rural areas grosely polluted, overgrazed, with exploited natural resources etc.
So it can thus be argued that the people of South Africa require sufficient and appropriate education.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Education is the answer to many of these issues. It is also not only about staying alive but everyone wants to have a luxury life which requires more from the environment. People with this mindset do not care about those that are less fortunate or hungry because they are too busy building their own empire.

      Delete
    2. I agree entirely Ma'am. Once again the problem is the system. This system was put in place by people and can thus be fixed by them, regarding they can change their attitude and place their own interests after the interests of others. But people are selfish...

      Delete
  16. I believe in South Africa , farmers tend to “play” with the soil with destructive techniques in hope of maximizing their profit but in the long run this destroys the soil resulting in a loss of fertility and thus lower yield. I think that this is just due to pure lack of knowledge and also lack of interest to even want to obtain that knowledge. Soil is so important to us and we all need to know that, especially the farmers of our lands in order to sustain our soils so that the growing of our crops will be possible in the future. Soil cultivation as we should know, eventually destroys all the soil aggregates which takes hundreds of years to get restored if at all possible, depending on the damage. Soil is also known as a non-renewable resource so surely we should all be more interested in looking after it since it is so important. Erosion is another huge problem that may result from intensive cultivation.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is correct, but is it possible to rectify the problems of farmers for the past 500 years? And how do we get the current commercial farmers to realise that their actions now will have a negative effect for future generations

21. It is difficult for emerging farmers to comply with sustainability of natural resources and especialy soil, the reason for this is the main objectives of the farmers which are profit maximisation and presure of credit payment. these famers mostly research on production techniques and making the most of the limited resources they have, which is good for production. there is also political presure on farmers who recieved the farms through land reform so they focus on production yield increas at what ever nature price. So it is not only nature that south africans have a hard time to have concern for. we live NOW.

  27. There are many ways in which soils are being affected in South Africa. But overgrazing is the most ubiquitous and concerning cause of soils being destroyed. Also, this country is regarded as a 'semi-arid' area by the UN and that is largely why "sensitive" soils and ecosysytems are put under immense pressure - we have dry soils and become easily overused because of it.
By reading some of the comments of others, clearly the apartheid legacy also played a role.
The lack of resources in certain areas induces migration aswell, which put overcrowded areas, to a certain degree, under threat too.
